My Top 5 Personal Development Books

I was 21 when I picked up my first Self Development book.  Up until that point I don’t think I had even heard the word ‘Personal Development’ and at the point of me finally finding out about it, it wasn’t even called that.  It was called ‘Self Help’ which I guess is the same thing but just said in simpler terms.  At that time in my life ‘Self help’ was a phrase that spoke so loudly to me.  I knew I needed help and I KNEW no one else was going to give it to me.  I don’t think I had ever felt so alone and lost in my life as I did when I walked into that store.  I was 21, pregnant and newly single.  It was not a happy place BUT it was a turning point in my life that I will forever be grateful for and one that I want to pass onto you today.  Now I’m not saying that day was where EVERYTHING changed (It’s been a long road) but it was where the change began.  Since that day I have read hundreds of books, listened to countless audios, attended many courses, talks and seminars, but it all started on that day and there are certain books that helped me the most.

Today I want to share with you my Top 5 ‘Self Development’ or ‘Self Help’ books so that maybe you can start the change you need for you.  Not every book will rock your world but every book has something that you can take away.  Those words or wisdom, values to live by, new ways to look at things and realisations about your own power will build up and help you create a wonderful life for you and the people you share it with.  So here it is, my top 5 books with a little bit about how they helped me on my journey.  Enjoy.

1 – Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers.

It was the first book I picked up.  The first book to give me some hope, drive and empowerment to take control back in my life.  Being 21, pregnant, single and without a stable support system, I was at a desperately low point and this book helped me get though that (Along with the Lily Allen Album lol).  I couldn’t go out and party my troubles away and I was at breaking point so although many great books came after, this is the one I have to put at the top of the list and give the most credit to.  It’s a book that opens your eyes up to the fact that whatever happens, you WILL BE OK and that the fear you feel is all in your head.  You are capable of great things and if you can get passed the self-doubt (which she coaches you on how to do) then you can turn things around and you can come out the over side of whatever situation you are in.

2 – The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

I’m not sure of the precise date this book came into my life but boy did it open my eyes up to the self-fulfilling prophecy that my life was.  What I mean by this is that, ‘What I was Saying About My Life Continued To Be True’.  I was what many might describe as a neg head who was mostly found sat in the middle of her own pity party fighting for the leader in victimhood and a BIG feel sorry for me badge.  I felt sad A LOT. I felt like a victim to my circumstance and I also felt like the world was against me and that I was being punished for being a horrible person (I used shorter, less socially acceptable words that I won’t mention here) in a previous life.  All of this continued to be true because I kept saying it, thinking it and sending out energy that was attracting it.  If something bad happened to me, I would say “Bad things comes in 3…something else bad is bound to happen”.  And guess what?  That’s precisely what did happen.  After reading this book I realised that I was attracting the bad into my life and I DIDN’T HAVE TO DO THAT ANYMORE! It seems so simple when you read it, but it WILL change your life….I Promise.

3 – The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield

The book that made me look at the world differently.  A real life philosophy told through a fictional story that will have you gripped.  I used to wake up early and go to bed early to make more time to read this book and I finished it in a matter of days.  I recommend it to everyone I meet, brought copies for my friends and instantly connect to people who say they loved it too.  There’s not much more I can say about it other then, go buy it, read it and let me know what you think!

4– The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein

A beautiful book written by a beautiful lady.  The contentment in Gabrielle’s eyes as she posed for the front cover of this book instantly drew me to it and I’m glad it did.  Again it was fuelled by an incredible transformational journey of someone who found themselves in a desperate place that they lifted themselves from.  This is a common denominator of many self help books, but this was a very spiritual journey and it spoke to me in many ways.  A story that lets you know you are never alone, even when you feel it.  There is an energetic field of power around you that is always there for you to tap into and it will ALWAYS have your back!

5 – Practicing The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle

Even when you think you have your shit together, sometimes life gets so busy that you end up chasing your tail even when you don’t have to.  By this I am referring to the ‘Busy Mind’.  The one that has you rethinking the past and over thinking the future.  The one that can have you sad and anxious even when everything in your life right now is absolutely fine!  Now of course we have meditation and yoga to help us with such things but having an understanding of WHY we are this way and what it is actually doing to the quality of our lives can actually spring you into immediate action or non action as it may be.  The main message I got from this book is that the present moment is all we have.  Yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn’t promised and all we every truly have is what is happening RIGHT NOW! The breath you just took is gone.  You can’t repeat it and that moment is lost forever.  The chances are you were thinking about the past or future while you took it so you never even had it.  This book will make you STOP and smell the flowers of TODAY because nothing else truly exists.

So that’s it!  I could go on forever and I’m sure this won’t be the last list of book recommendations I make, but it is the first and I am pleased to be passing it on to whoever reads this.  I hope these books give you some hope, some answers and some peace.  Each book is a stepping stone.  Enjoy the journey.

Lots of Love
